I’m usually a strict “No Christmas until after Thanksgiving” sort of person. But I happened to be visiting my parents for a weekend in early November and we found ourselves in Michael’s craft store. My family isn’t always the best at just hanging around and talking – we’re either off doing something or the TV is on -so working together on a simple craft is a great excuse for the family to just sit around and enjoy each other’s company (I’m sure a few of you can relate!) While in the craft store we each selected a simple and inexpensive little Christmas craft kit (all were under $5) then set to work around the family room table.
Every year, my best friend and I get/make a matching ornament. It’s a super fun tradition and now even more unique that we live on different coasts. A couple of years ago, we were in Washington DC together during December, so got an official White House ornament – last year, she was visiting me in California so I planned a crafty ornament. I had forgotten about it until I decorated my Christmas tree, but when I saw it again I remembered how much I liked it along with the fun time we had making it together.
I re-awakened my crafty bug recently when I offered to do decorations for a friend’s baby shower (which I still need to share here). Usually working on car projects, crafting felt like a good outlet. As soon as I saw the lovely felt-based Valentine Wreath from Positively Splendid, I knew what my next project would be. Besides being adorable, it was the perfect excuse to take down our little Christmas tree (my husband is a firm believer in leaving the tree up until “after finals”…even though we’re both long out of school).
